Selection of earthenware pieces in Beer Jugs and Pitchers, Plates, Mugs... decorated with Alsatian towns...
Earthenware is one of the oldest techniques used, dating back to the Middle Ages and made famous by a small town in north-east Italy, Faenza... hence the name Faïence...
Made from potash, sand, feldspar and clay, the result is a porous biscuit that needs to be covered with a glaze to make it watertight.
The earthenware piece undergoes an initial firing at between 1000 and 1200°C for around eight hours, just enough to solidify the piece while preparing it for glazing.
The final firing, once the glaze has been applied, takes place at a lower temperature than the first.
