The Gnome is a small legendary humanoid creature from European folklore, 35 cm tall and red in colour, wearing a large white-red-black knitted hat and a white beard.
He is often confused with elves and goblins, who like him are part of the little people.
Paracelsus, in the 16th century, includes him in his list of elementals, as an earth elemental.
It is characterised by a very small size, a subterranean life, and a great knowledge of telluric secrets.
