The Story of Hansi, Emblematic Alsatian Artist

Jean-Jacques Waltz, known as Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French illustrator and artist born in Colmar. In 1894, his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial design, where he also pursued painting and decorative arts. After his time in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became famous as a postcard illustrator.

The motifs of his illustrations often combine idyllic village scenes with sharp anti-German caricatures. Whilst at first glance his works appear to be innocent scenes of Alsatian life, closer inspection reveals a dislike of the Germans that became Hansi's hallmark and distinctive artistic voice.
