Jean-Jacques Waltz, alias Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French artist and illustrator born in Colmar in Alsace. In 1894, his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial drawing, painting, and decorative arts. After his stay in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became famous as a postcard artist and regional illustrator.

The motifs of his illustrations often combine idyllic Alsatian village scenes with humorous anti-German caricatures. Whilst at first glance his illustrations appear to be innocent scenes of traditional Alsatian life, closer observation reveals a marked dislike of the Germans that would become Hansi's distinctive trademark.
