About Hansi : Jean-Jacques Waltz, alias Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French artist and illustrator born in Colmar. In 1894, his father sent him to Lyon where he studied industrial drawing, as well as painting and decorative arts. After his stay in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became famous as an artist of Alsatian postcards. The motifs of his illustrations often combine idyllic village scenes with clever satirical caricatures full of social critique. Whilst his illustrations appear at first glance to be innocent scenes of Alsatian life, careful observation reveals a deep aversion to German authority, which became the hallmark of his work.
