Jean-Jacques Waltz, alias Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French illustrator and artist born in Colmar who shaped the visual identity of Alsace. In 1894, his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial drawing as well as courses in painting and decorative arts. After his stay in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became famous as a postcard artist and creator of regional designs.
The motifs of his illustrations often combine idyllic village scenes with biting anti-German caricatures. Whilst at first glance his illustrations appear to be innocent scenes of Alsatian life, closer observation reveals a dislike of the Germans that was to become Hansi's distinctive trademark. This artist remains essential for understanding Alsatian culture and its authentic souvenirs.
