The Legendary Art of Hansi, Alsatian Illustrator

Jean-Jacques Waltz, alias Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French illustrator born in Colmar who became a symbol of Alsatian identity. In 1894 his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial drawing, where he enriched his skills through courses in painting and decorative arts. After his stay in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became famous as a postcard artist, popularising the essence of the region.

The motifs of his illustrations often combine idyllic village scenes with humorous and satirical caricatures. While at first glance his illustrations appear to be innocent scenes of Alsatian life, closer observation reveals a marked dislike of the Germans, which becomes the distinctive hallmark of Hansi's art.
