Jean-Jacques Waltz, alias Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French illustrator and artist born in Colmar. In 1894 his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial drawing, painting and decorative arts. After his stay in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became famous as a postcard artist, transforming this medium into genuine popular art.

The motifs of his illustrations combine idyllic village scenes with biting, anti-German caricatures. Whilst at first glance his illustrations appear to be innocent scenes of Alsatian life, closer observation reveals a dislike of the Germans that would become Hansi's distinctive trademark. This subtlety made his works important historical and artistic documents of great value for the region.
