Jean-Jacques Waltz, Alias Hansi

Jean-Jacques Waltz, better known by the pseudonym Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is an internationally renowned French illustrator and artist, born in Colmar in Alsace. In 1894, his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial drawing, complemented by training in painting and decorative arts in the same city. After his stay in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became famous as a postcard artist and talented illustrator.

The Distinctive Art of Hansi

The motifs of his Alsatian illustrations subtly combine idyllic village scenes with biting anti-German caricatures. Whilst at first glance his illustrations appear to be innocent scenes of Alsatian life, closer observation reveals a dislike of the Germans that would become Hansi's trademark. This duality between rural poetry and political criticism makes them exceptional Alsace souvenirs and treasured Alsace gifts for collectors.
