Jean-Jacques Waltz, Alias Hansi, Master Illustrator

Jean-Jacques Waltz, known by the pseudonym Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French illustrator born in Colmar. In 1894 his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial drawing, where he also pursued further education in painting and decorative arts.

After his stay in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became celebrated as a postcard artist. His works combine idyllic village scenes with biting, sharp-witted anti-German caricatures that reflect the Alsatian spirit of that era.
