On May 5, 1948, the Prefects of Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin adopted an administrative flag for Alsace based on the coat of arms proposed by the heraldist Robert Louis and the curator of the French national archives Jacques Meurgey de Tupigny. This symbol proudly represents Alsatian identity and its centuries-old traditions.
