Originally (1240), the seal of Obernai bore St. Peter, then the sole patron saint of the church. Around 1285, St. Paul was added.
It was probably towards the end of the 15th century that the one-headed eagle, symbol of the Empire, began to replace the two Apostles as the town's emblem.
