The Artist Hansi, Legendary Alsatian Illustrator

Jean-Jacques Waltz, known as Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French illustrator and artist born in Colmar in 1873. In 1894, his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial drawing, painting and decorative arts. After his stay in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became famous as a postcard artist, creating works that combined idyllic village scenes with biting anti-German caricatures.

The Essence of Hansi Illustrations

The motifs of his illustrations celebrate Alsatian life with a particular critical perspective. Whilst at first glance his illustrations appear to be innocent scenes of Alsace, closer observation reveals a dislike of the Germans that became the distinctive hallmark of this Alsatian illustrator. His works remain unique artistic testimonies of the Alsatian soul and its history.
