Illustrator Hansi, Legend of Alsace

Jean-Jacques Waltz, alias Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French illustrator born in Colmar, recognised worldwide for his magnificent creations celebrating Alsace. In 1894 his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial drawing, where he also pursued studies in painting and decorative arts. After his stay in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became famous as a painter of prestigious Postcards.

Artistic Features of Hansi

The motifs of Hansi's illustrations combine idyllic village scenes with biting and poetic anti-German caricatures in a harmonious manner. Whilst at first glance his illustrations appear to be innocent scenes of Alsatian life, closer observation reveals a subtle dislike of the Germans, the hallmark of Hansi's talent. These works remain precious testimonies to Alsatian cultural heritage.
