Jean-Jacques Waltz, known as Hansi: The iconic illustrator of Alsace

Jean-Jacques Waltz, better known under the pseudonym Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French illustrator and artist born in Colmar. In 1894 his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial drawing, and he also studied painting and decorative arts in the same city.

After his stay in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became famous as a postcard artist. The motifs of his illustrations often combine idyllic village scenes with biting anti-German caricatures.

Political art concealed beneath innocent surfaces

Whilst at first glance his illustrations appear to be innocent scenes of Alsatian life, closer observation reveals a marked dislike of Germany that becomes the hallmark of this great master of regional illustration. This duality gives his work its richness and depth.
