Jean-Jacques Waltz, alias Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a renowned French illustrator and artist originally from Colmar. In 1894, his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial drawing, complemented by training in painting and decorative arts. After his time in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became famous as a postcard artist and illustrator.

The motifs of his illustrations masterfully combine idyllic village scenes with biting anti-German caricatures. Whilst at first glance his creations appear to be innocent scenes of Alsatian life, closer observation reveals a dislike of the Germans that becomes Hansi's distinctive trademark. These works testify to Alsatian regional identity and its rich history.
