The Artist Hansi, Legendary Illustrator of Alsace

Jean-Jacques Waltz, known under the pseudonym Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French illustrator born in Colmar. In 1894 his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial drawing, as well as painting and decorative arts. After his stay in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became famous as a postcard artist.

Characteristics of Hansi Illustration

The motifs of his illustrations often combine idyllic village scenes with biting anti-German caricatures. While at first glance his illustrations appear to be innocent scenes of Alsatian life, closer observation reveals a dislike of the Germans that became Hansi's distinctive trademark. This tourist postcard perfectly embodies the timeless charm and gentle social critique of the artist.
