Hansi, the Legendary Illustrator of Alsace

Jean-Jacques Waltz, alias Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French artist and illustrator born in Colmar in 1873. In 1894 his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial drawing, where he also pursued further education in painting and decorative arts. After his stay in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became famous as an illustrator of postcards and an internationally renowned cartoonist.

The Unique Art of Hansi

The motifs of his illustrations often combine idyllic village scenes with biting anti-German caricatures. Whilst at first glance his drawings appear to be innocent scenes of Alsatian life, closer observation reveals a marked aversion to German occupation that became the distinctive signature of Hansi. His works represent a unique testimony to the Alsatian cultural identity of the early 20th century.
