Jean-Jacques Waltz, alias Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a renowned French illustrator born in Colmar. In 1894 his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial drawing, as well as painting and decorative arts. After his stay in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became famous as a designer of iconic postcards.
The motifs of his illustrations often combine idyllic village scenes with subtle social critique caricature. While at first glance his illustrations appear to be innocent scenes of Alsatian life, closer observation reveals fine social satire characteristic of Hansi's style. This artist remains a major figure in Alsatian culture and heritage.
