With her blue and black tartan jacket, frayed cream underskirt and yellow and black woven shawl tied around her neck, this 22 cm Alsace witch has a gentle, kindly air despite her tall black fur hat. Standing on her clip stand, she easily finds her place on a sideboard, chest of drawers or amid an autumn display.
Broom in hand, she embodies those watchful figures found in the oral folk tales of Alsatian villages, somewhere between warning and mischievous wink.
For a long time, children in Alsatian villages were told of old women living at the edge of the woods, capable of both healing and casting spells. These tales, mixing fear and fascination, shaped an Alsatian tradition rich in colourful characters, of which the witch is surely the most iconic.
Even today, these figures continue to inspire regional decoration, paying tribute to local folklore with a mischievous nod as Halloween approaches.
