The Artist Hansi, Alsatian Legend

Jean-Jacques Waltz, known by the pseudonym Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French illustrator born in Colmar. In 1894 his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial drawing, as well as painting and decorative arts. After his stay in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became renowned as a postcard artist, transforming each illustration into a work of art.

Distinctive Style and Engagement

The motifs of his illustrations often combine idyllic village scenes with biting anti-German caricatures. While his works at first glance appear as innocent scenes of Alsatian life, closer observation reveals a dislike of the Germans, the hallmark of Hansi. This political and cultural dimension makes him an indispensable artist for understanding Alsace.
