The Artist Hansi, Master of Alsatian Illustration

Jean-Jacques Waltz, known as Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French illustrator and artist born in Colmar in Alsace. In 1894 his father sends him to Lyon to study industrial drawing, where he also pursues courses in painting and decorative arts.

After his stay in Lyon, he returns to Alsace where he becomes famous as a postcard artist and illustrator. His unique style combines idyllic village scenes with satirical caricatures, creating an unmistakable visual language of the region.

Characteristics of Hansi Illustrations

The motifs in Hansi's illustrations merge picturesque Alsatian landscapes with social commentary. At first glance, his works appear as innocent scenes of everyday Alsatian life, but closer observation reveals a subtle artistic critique that becomes his artistic signature.

His postcards capture the essence of Alsatian life, featuring children playing in streets, women in traditional costumes, and scenes of daily life in Colmar and neighbouring towns such as Obernai.
