The Ponts Couverts (Covered Bridges) were built between 1230 and 1250 to reinforce Strasbourg's defences along the branches of the Ill river, forming an essential part of the medieval fortification system. Connected to the ramparts, these gallery bridges covered water accesses and were topped with wooden roofs, hence their iconic name that has endured for centuries.
