Jean-Jacques Waltz, alias Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French illustrator and artist born in Colmar in 1873. In 1894, his father sends him to Lyon to study industrial design, completed by training in painting and decorative arts. Upon his return to Alsace, Hansi becomes famous as a postcard artist, creating a unique style that combines charming village scenes with subtle social critique. The motifs of his illustrations reveal a dislike of German occupation, a distinctive hallmark of his work.
