Jean-Jacques Waltz, alias Hansi or Uncle Hansi, is a French illustrator and artist born in Colmar, and a true master of Alsatian visual arts. In 1894, his father sent him to Lyon to study industrial design, complemented by training in painting and decorative arts. After his stay in Lyon, he returned to Alsace where he became famous as a postcard artist, leaving a lasting mark on regional history with his unique talent.

The motifs of his illustrations often combine idyllic village scenes with humorous anti-German caricatures. While at first glance his illustrations appear to be innocent scenes of Alsatian life, closer observation reveals a deliberate aversion to the Germans, which became Hansi's characteristic signature.
