It is often described as one of the most beautiful towns in Alsace - and the reputation is well deserved. Obernai, a former imperial city of the Decapolis, concentrates within a few hectares an exceptional architectural heritage, generous vineyards, authentic gastronomy and an intact Alsatian way of life. The second most visited destination in Bas-Rhin after Strasbourg, it is best explored on foot, in a well-organised day.
Start at the Market Square, one of the most beautiful and best-preserved in Alsace. Take in the exceptional ensemble that surrounds it : the Kappelturm (60-metre belfry whose oldest bells date from 1429), the Renaissance Town Hall from the 16th century with its arcades and sculpted oriel, the Grain Market, the Saint Odile Fountain of 1904, and the famous Six-Bucket Well from the 16th century. If you are there on a Thursday morning, the weekly market - documented since 1301 - fills the square with colour and flavour.
A short walk from the Market Square, the Saints-Pierre-et-Paul Church impresses with its two slender 60-metre spires. Built between 1867 and 1872 in neo-Gothic style, it houses superb 19th-century stained-glass windows and a choir decorated with frescoes depicting the life of Saint Odile.
Obernai rewards those who explore it on foot, eyes turned upward. Leave the Market Square and lose yourself in the cobbled lanes of the historic centre, lined with 15th and 17th-century half-timbered houses. The marked historic trail guides you effortlessly from one monument to the next.

Obernai has several excellent addresses for a well-earned break. Opt for a winstub for a flammekueche, choucroute garnie or baeckeoffe, paired with a glass of local riesling or pinot gris. Several wine estates also offer tastings in the town centre, including Domaine Robert Blanck.
Obernai has preserved part of its medieval ramparts with several towers. A marked walking circuit allows you to tour them in under an hour, offering lovely views over the rooftops of the old town and the surrounding vineyards.
Obernai sits at the heart of the Bas-Rhin vineyard. Leaving the ramparts on the western side, you step immediately into the vines. Marked vineyard trails allow you to stroll among the vines, with views over the town and the first Vosges ridges. In autumn, the colours are spectacular.
If you have an extra half-day, Mont Sainte-Odile is just 8 kilometres west of Obernai. The monastery perched at 763 metres houses the tomb of Saint Odile, patron saint of Alsace. The panoramic view over the Alsatian plain, the Rhine and the Black Forest is exceptional on clear days. The mysterious Pagan Wall is accessible on foot from the monastery.
During your visit to Obernai, stop by our shop La Boite aux Trésors, at 4 rue Sainte-Odile. Soufflenheim pottery, embroidered textiles, food specialities, decorative objects and typically Alsatian souvenirs - the best of regional craftsmanship awaits you there. Our products are also available for delivery across Europe on decoalsace.fr.
