Obernai Christmas Market

The Obernai Christmas Market - a must in Alsace

When the first garlands light up at the foot of the Kappelturm belfry and the scent of mulled wine fills the cobbled lanes, Obernai is transformed into an enchanted Christmas village. Established since the 1990s in the historic centre of this medieval town, one of the most picturesque on the Alsace Wine Route, the Obernai Christmas Market has become one of the most authentic and beloved Christmas markets in Alsace.

Nicknamed "the gourmet market", it stands out for its dual gastronomic and craft identity. Around forty wooden chalets are spread across the various squares of the historic town centre, creating an enchanting trail between half-timbered houses, Renaissance fountains and medieval monuments. Just 25 km from Strasbourg, Obernai offers an intimate and authentic alternative, far from the crowds of the larger cities.

A market dedicated to Alsatian gastronomy

  • Obernai mulled wine from the winemakers' cauldron - prepared to a secret recipe by local wine growers, the true signature of the market
  • Bredeles and gingerbread - the essential Alsatian Christmas biscuits
  • Foie gras, cured meats and charcuterie from artisan producers
  • Jams, honeys and condiments from local producers
  • Chocolates, pralines and confectionery from Alsatian chocolatiers
  • Alsatian wines - Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Crémant
  • Christmas ales and artisan hot drinks

Crafts and Christmas gifts

Beyond gastronomy, the Obernai Christmas Market is also a wonderful hunting ground for original and authentic Christmas gifts. Craftspeople offer unique creations: ceramics and Soufflenheim pottery, wooden Christmas decorations, jewellery, textiles, blown glassware, handmade toys and many other regional treasures.

Entertainment and festive atmosphere

  • Christmas concerts on the town centre squares
  • Family treasure hunt through the historic lanes
  • Nativity scene exhibitions from around the world
  • Children's entertainment - letters to Father Christmas, games and shows
  • Free shuttle buses from peripheral car parks at weekends

Practical information

The Obernai Christmas Market takes place every year from late November to late December on the various squares of Obernai's historic town centre. Admission is entirely free. Usual opening hours are 10am to 7pm on weekdays, extended to 8pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The market is generally closed on 25 December. For exact opening times and dates of the current edition, visit the Obernai Tourist Office website.
