The Alsatian Snow Globe

Just pick it up, turn it gently, and watch the snow swirl silently around a miniature landscape. The snow globe - boule de neige in French, Schneekugel in German - is one of the most universally loved objects in existence. A childhood memory for some, a collector's item for others, a timeless gift for all - it crosses generations without ever losing its magic. And in its Alsatian version, with storks, half-timbered houses and snow-covered villages, it captures the entire spirit of a region in a few centimetres of glass.

The invention of the snow globe - a Viennese story born by accident

The story of the snow globe begins in Vienna at the end of the 19th century. Its origins may go back to the 1878 Universal Exhibition in Paris, where master glassmakers were celebrated - Pierre Boirre, director of the Verrerie des Lilas, is said to have created the first "panoramic globes" containing a miniature scene covered in snow.

But it was Erwin Perzy I, a specialist in surgical instruments, who truly popularised the object. While trying to make a lamp to illuminate operating theatres, he inserted glass and metal powder - then semolina - into a water-filled glass globe. He noticed that the effect resembled swirling snow. Inspired, he placed a small reproduction of the Mariazell sanctuary inside the sphere - and the modern snow globe was born.

Today led by Erwin Perzy III, the Viennese house proudly claims this invention that became a cult object copied the world over. It was in their workshops that the world's most famous snow globe was created - the one that drops from the dying hero's hand in Orson Welles' cult film "Citizen Kane" in 1941.

From Vienna to the world - a universal souvenir

In the 1940s, Erwin Perzy II began inserting Christmas elements into their snow globes to support young American soldiers far from home. The Original Wiener Schneekugelmanufaktur then began selling its products in the United States, and the snow globe craze crossed the Atlantic. Since then, millions of snow globes have been produced every year worldwide.

The Alsatian snow globe - storks, half-timbering and enchanted villages

In Alsace, the snow globe has found an ideal canvas. What region lends itself better to the snowy, fairy-tale world of the snow globe than Alsace with its half-timbered villages, Christmas markets, storks and Vosges landscapes? The most common Alsatian motifs are :

  • The stork - symbol of Alsace - perched on its nest atop a chimney or church steeple
  • The Alsatian half-timbered house with its colourful facades
  • The snow-covered Alsatian village with its church, fountain and cobbled lanes
  • The Strasbourg Cathedral or Colmar's famous Petite Venise quarter

When shaken, the Alsatian snow globe sends a flurry of snowflakes swirling over this miniature scene - recreating in a few seconds the magical atmosphere of a Christmas morning in Alsace.

A timeless gift and souvenir

The Alsatian snow globe is one of the most universal souvenirs - it speaks to all ages, all cultures, all tastes. It is given at Christmas, Easter, for a birthday or simply to say "I'm thinking of you". Light to carry, delicate to look at, it crosses borders and years without ever going out of fashion. A stork in a glass bubble - that is all of Alsace, tucked into your luggage.
