Alsatian Christmas Menu - The Festive Meal from Aperitif to Dessert

6231 Views 5247 Liked

In Alsace, Christmas dinner is a special moment. The great festive classics are all there, reinvented with the flavours of the region: gingerbread, mustards, aromatic white wines and an abundance of little biscuits baked during Advent. Here is a complete Alsatian Christmas menu, from aperitif to petits fours, with a detailed recipe from our blog for each course.

The aperitif

To open the celebrations, nothing beats a glass of Crémant d'Alsace, lively and elegant. For nibbles, the Great Strasbourg Fir Tree in puff pastry always makes an impression in the middle of the table: it is shared by hand and recalls the famous Christmas tree on Place Kléber.

The starter: foie gras

Foie gras is one of the prides of Alsatian gastronomy, and Christmas is its moment. For a change from the classic terrine, try our pan-fried foie gras in a gingerbread crust, combining the melting texture of the liver with the spicy crunch of gingerbread. It pairs beautifully with a Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives.

The main course: capon

The quintessential festive bird, capon takes pride of place on the table on 25 December. Our capon stuffed with Christmas spice mustard brings a fragrant Alsatian touch. Serve it with a Pinot Gris, whose roundness is a perfect match for the bird and its stuffing.

The cheese

No Alsatian feast is complete without Munster, the great cheese of the Vosges valleys. Serve it simply, with a few cumin seeds on the side and country bread. It traditionally pairs with a Gewurztraminer.

The desserts

Now for the Advent treats, often prepared several days in advance:

  • Beerawecka, pear and dried fruit bread, served in thin slices
  • Christstollen, candied fruit sweet bread under its coat of icing sugar
  • Linzertorte, the almond and raspberry jam tart
  • For a lighter note, Käsküeche, the Alsatian cheese tart

Coffee and petits fours

To finish, out come the Advent biscuit tins. Bredele are a must: discover our recipes for the 8 classic varieties. Schenkele, small fried biscuits, round off the selection nicely.

Around the Christmas meal

Alsatian festivities are not limited to Christmas Eve. On 6 December, children look forward to the Saint Nicholas Mannele. Throughout Advent, people warm up with a hot white wine with citrus and spices. And on the morning of the 25th, a Kougelhopf makes for a festive breakfast.

Give an Alsatian Christmas

For loved ones who cannot join you, a gift basket of Alsatian specialities is a way to share a little of this festive table: gingerbread, Bredele, wines and treats, put together to your liking.
